Go Nuts—It’s Good For You!

Nuts are nutritious.  They are cholesterol-free and full of important nutrients, including protein and fiber.  Nuts are also a great source of vitamins such as folic acid, niacin and vitamins E and B-6, and minerals such as magnesium, copper, zinc, selenium, phosphorous, and potassium.

Nut consumption doesn’t necessarily lead to weight gain.  In preliminary studies, researches have found that one to two ounces of nuts added to the diet lend a feeling of satiety, and help contribute to weight maintenance or even weight loss.

People who eat nuts regularly cut their risk of heart disease by half, compared to those who rarely or never eat nuts.  Nuts have also been shown to help lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

Nuts may be high in fat but it’s the good kind.  85% of the fat in nuts is unsaturated, which can actually lower bad cholesterol levels.

Nuts are a healthy addition to your diet.  Use nut butters as a healthy spread, toss chopped nuts into salads and cereal, puree nuts into sauces and gravies, and incorporate them into baked goods.  They are the “perfect secret ingredient”.

Think “European” and use nuts daily as a hors d’oeuvre.   Your body will thank you.
